How Much Do Custom Closets Cost?

Dave Kushner • August 9, 2019
With any home improvement project, the costs involved are going to be one of your first concerns. There is no sense in starting a large-scale project if you don’t know if you can pay for it, so of course you need to make sure that it fits within your budget. Custom closets are one type of popular home renovation that can be done on a large or small budget.

At Closet Decor & More, we specialize in creating high-quality, unique closet systems that are designed for the specific people who will be using them. Because every custom closet is different, it would be impossible to give an accurate price quote across the board. What we can do, however, is to discuss the factors that go into the pricing as well as the other considerations to keep in mind when deciding whether a custom closet system is right for you.

What Makes Custom Closets More (or Less) Expensive?

There a ton of options available when you install custom closets in your home. You can spend a lot of money if you want a very luxurious closet that resembles one that you might see on television in the home of a celebrity. Or you can look for a more budget-friendly option. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the possibilities, so here are some of the factors that can make a custom closet cost more or less than the top of your budgeted allowance for the project.

First, the size of the closet will have an impact in most cases. While it is possible to make a small closet into a more complicated and expensive system than you’d have in a large walk-in closet, it’s not a common situation. Larger closets usually require more materials and more labor, which add up to a bigger bill. The other reason for a higher price tag on a larger closet is that in many cases, you are storing more in the larger closet, which can require more components.

Another factor to keep in mind is the type and number of closet accessories that you need to store everything you want to keep in the space. If you are using the closet only to store a small wardrobe and a few pairs of shoes, then you will need fewer organizers than you would if you had a large wardrobe, lots of accessories, an impressive shoe collection, and so on. Your closet designer will be able to give you some suggestions on what types of closet accessories would be best for the items you are storing.

Finally, luxurious extras will, of course, cost more than the basics. You might decide to add an expensive chandelier, for example, or new flooring in the closet. Or you might want to completely renovate the space by knocking down and rebuilding walls. None of this is included in the cost of the custom closet system itself, but all of it will figure into the final cost of your completed project.

Can Custom Closets Save Me Money?

While it’s common knowledge that investing in home improvements can raise the value of your home and command a higher listing price when you go to put your house on the market, you might not realize that your custom closet system might end up saving you money little by little as the years go by.

One of the most common ways that a closet system can save you money is by reducing the amount of storage-related damage your items sustain. If you are currently squishing your clothing into your closet because you don’t have enough room for everything, you might have snagged clothes, pulled shoulders, deep creases, missing buttons, and so on. When you have plenty of room to store items properly, however, you will tend to see a lot less of this type of damage.

You might also find that you are losing items less frequently. It is a frustrating experience when you cannot find a pair of shoes or an article of clothing you know you had. This commonly happens when parents put away a box of clothes for a child to grow into and then can’t find the box later, so they go and purchase clothing for the child. A few months later, the box appears; it might have been placed in the garage or was simply in the back of an overstuffed closet. Either way, it’s an annoying occurrence. When you have a dedicated space for each item, you will be able to access your belongings when you need them and you will not have to re-purchase them due to loss.

How Can I Save Money on My Custom Closet System?

Your professional closet organizer wants to help you get the closet storage systems that you need to keep your home organized. Here are some tips on saving money on this home improvement project:
  • Always use a professional. Don’t hire a fly-by-night company and don’t waste money on inexpensive closet systems you purchase off of a shelf. The reason for this is that you want a fully warrantied product that is going to last a long time. Those cheap wire shelving units can end up causing damage to your walls and rarely fit the closet properly, which will cause you to have to spend more money in the long run.
  • Start small. If you have several closets that need organizational help but a limited budget, start with a small closet, if feasible. You might be surprised by how much space opens up in your home from just that small change.
  • Talk to your closet designer. We have a lot of experience with keeping projects within our clients’ budgets, but we need to know about the budget in order to do that. Let your designer know how much you’d like to spend and he or she will see what they can do about creating a system that falls in that range.
